U-C professors sue to stop ancient bones transfer

San Diego, California (AP) April 2012

Professors at the University of California are fighting efforts to give two 10,000-year-old skeletons to Indian tribes.

U-T San Diego (http://bit.ly/IgSIwF) says a dozen Kumeyaay Indian tribes in San Diego County filed a federal suit earlier this month, demanding the remains be handed over for traditional burial.

Three U-C professors sued in Northern California to block any transfer. They argue there’s no evidence that the remains are related to the tribes and they should be preserved for future research.

The bones were discovered in 1976 on the grounds of University House, traditional residence of the U-C San Diego chancellor. The school was intending to turn over the remains before the professors indicated they would sue.
