Guitarist Micki Free (Cherokee and Comanche) rocked the crowd at this year's Fond Du Lac Enrollee Days on June 25th, in Cloquet, Minnesota. Having spent the last five years making award-winning Native American flute music, Free is back to rockin the stage with "American Horse," his latest rock album.
Free was discovered by Gene Simmons of Kiss, in the 1970s, managed by Diana Ross and performed with such groups as Shalamar in the '80s and Crown of Thorns in the early '90s. While with Shalamar, they released such hits as a Top 20 smash "Dancing in the Sheets" from the Footloose soundtrack and its Grammy Award-winning "Don't Get Stopped in Beverly Hills" from Beverly Hills Cop. In 2002 Free set out on a solo rock career. His second solo rock album "Gypsy Cowboy" was nominated for seven Native American Music Awards and earned him 'Best Male Artist of the Year' that same year. More Nammys followed when Free embraced Native American flute music, starting with "the Sun Chaser" in 2003.
In 2004 Free was approached by the Seminole Tribe of Florida, which had purchased Hard Rock International and became their Director of Promotion and Special Events, which has made him a worldwide ambassador for Hard Rock International and The Seminole Tribe of Florida. During his tenure with Hard Rock International, he created and directed the Seminole Star Search, Native Music Rocks and was the creator and vice president of Native Music Rocks label.
With the stellar release of the "Micki Free American Horse LIVE in Hyde Park – featuring Bill Wyman formerly of the Rolling Stones" DVD bundle, Micki and his band continue touring across Indian Country and are set to perform select dates in blues-rock venues across the UK this coming November. Rockin it Jimi Hendrix style and keeping the music alive, Free will keep on rockin with some killer new blues stuff from his soon to be released CD on Cargo Records; "Micki Free Electric Blues."
