Mashpee Wampanoags to build health clinic

Mashpaee, Massachusetts (AP) August 2010

The Mashpee Wampanoags are building a health center on tribal lands with the help of a $675,000 federal grant.

The clinic, expected to open by January, will include a 4,800-square foot building with four exam rooms, two procedure rooms and a laboratory.

Tribal council member Cheryl Frye-Cromwell tells the Cape Cod Times that medical and dental services will be available to tribe members free through the Indian Health Service, a branch of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She says members will be encouraged to join MassHealth or another insurance program to cut costs to the federal office.

Frye-Cromwell says a clinic in Mashpee will encourage more members to seek health care because they wonÂ’t have to travel.
