Group gets money to design powwow grounds

The Rapid City Council has approved releasing $150,000 for design work on an American Indian powwow grounds.

The council has set aside a total of $812,000 in 2012 money for the project of the nonprofit Alliance of Tribal Tourism Advocates.

The group also is getting $100,000 from state Sen. Stan Adelstein and $125,000 from the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs. Members hope to begin construction on the powwow grounds and art market next year.

The Alliance of Tribal Tourism Advocates represents the state’s nine tribes.
