Salt River Pima-Maricopa member sentenced in child abuse case

Phoenix, Arizona (AP) September 2010

A Mesa woman who’s a member of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community has been sentenced to nearly four years in federal prison in a child abuse case.

Prosecutors say 43-year-old Tamara Kay Vest was given a 45-month prison term last week by a federal judge in Phoenix.

Authorities say Vest was accused of physically abusing three victims under the age of 12 while they resided at her home on the reservation between July 2007 and September 2008.

Another person who also resided at Vest’s home witnessed the incidents of abuse and reported them to tribal police. Vest pleaded guilty in March to child abuse.
