University: No Native American artifacts at building site

Berkeley, California (AP) 1-09

A study commissioned by UC Berkeley found no evidence of prehistoric Native American artifacts or human remains beneath the construction site for the campus’s new $125 million athletics center.

The full report released Jan. 9 says debris in the area is believed to have been associated with the construction of Memorial Stadium in 1923 or from private residences in the area.

Activists have protested the construction of the Student Athlete High Performance Center. Some sat in the trees at the site for 21 months to prevent them from being cut down.

The center will provide medical and academic facilities for athletes from 13 of UC Berkeley’s 27 intercollegiate teams.
