Panel endorses change to Indian scholarship

A legislative committee says American Indians from tribes outside South Dakota should be eligible for a scholarship to state colleges or universities.

The House Education Committee during January unanimously passed HB1046, which broadens eligibility for the Hagen-Harvey Scholarship.

The $6,000, four-year award currently is open only to students enrolled in South Dakota tribes. The change would open applications to students living in South Dakota but enrolled in any recognized U.S. tribe.

The scholarship must be used at a South Dakota college, university or technical institute.
