Jemez Pueblo leaders optimistic over casino

Jemez Pueblo leaders say a proposed casino in southern New Mexico would be an economic benefit to the community. But it’s not a done deal and still requires approval from the Bureau of Indian Affairs and New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez. Pueblo leaders made their case Monday at a community meeting.

If the federal government approves the casino proposal, it goes to Martinez, who has said she is not convinced about off-site gaming but is willing to listen.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reports the proposed casino faces opposition from nearby Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino. Opponents argue the casino would be too far from the Jemez Pueblo and runs counter to Indian gaming as a way to provide jobs for Native Americans.
