The oldest Kalapuya Indian river canoe in the Willamette Valley is now back in the hands of its people.
The Willamette Heritage Center recently donated the canoe to the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. The canoe now sits in a glass case at the tribe’s government building.
Heritage center director Peter Booth tells the Statesman Journal (http://bit.ly/nBN9h2) the organization wanted to honor the tribe’s desire to restore as much of its heritage as possible. He says the tribe can provide a safe and secure environment for the canoe, so the Willamette Heritage Center can focus on other projects.
