US Justice official visits Menominee

Madison, Wisconsin (AP) August 2010

A U.S. Department of Justice official visited a Menominee Indian wellness center that benefited from federal stimulus money.

Associate Attorney General Tom Perrelli plans to visit the center along with a local U.S. attorney and the director of the Justice Department’s Violence Against Women Center.

The tribe received nearly $900,000 in stimulus money to help victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

The tribe used the money to maintain an existing position and hire a sexual assault counselor, two shelter aides and a specialized prosecutor.

The Justice Department says the tribe reports that more sexual assault victims are seeking help thanks to the improved resources and victims are also receiving more specialized assistance.
