Kelley says UND nickname should go

Grand Forks, North Dakota (AP) June 2011

University of North Dakota President Robert Kelley says it’s time for the school to move beyond the Fighting Sioux nickname dispute.

The Legislature this year passed a bill requiring UND to keep using the nickname that the NCAA finds offensive. The NCAA says it will penalize the university if it continues to use the nickname and American Indian head logo.

UND might also have problems joining the Big Sky Conference next year as part of its move to NCAA Division I.

Kelley told a KFGO radio talk show on Monday that the nickname and logo need to go “for the success of our university and the success of our student athletes.” He says the Legislature should vote to overturn its bill when it meets in November to redraw legislative districts.
