South Dakota governor plans to start meeting tribal leaders

Gov. Dennis Daugaard says he plans to start meeting next month with leaders of South Dakota’s American Indian tribes.

During an appearance on KCCR radio, the governor said he wants to start with one-on-one meetings so he can build personal relationships with elected leaders of the Sioux tribes. He says he has tentative plans to meet with four tribal leaders soon.

Daugaard says that when he was running for governor last year, he developed a relationship with a tribal leader after a meeting that included only Daugaard, his wife Linda and the tribal leader. He says it’s more difficult to build trust when meetings include a larger number of people.

The governor has said he wants to find ways the state and tribes can work together to solve problems.
