by Nick Vander Puy
Reserve, Wisconsin (LCOTV)

On April 7, Sawyer County and Lac Courte Oreilles Reservation voters go to the polls to elect a new circuit court judge. The choices are Tom Duffy Jr. and Gerald Wright. This is the first contested Sawyer County judge's race that people can remember in many years.

There are Wright and Duffy campaign signs all over the county. Both candidates are advertising heavily.

Saying he wants to get get tough on crime, Tom Duffy Jr. has both police and sheriff support on and off the rez.

As to the disproportionate number of Native inmates inside the Sawyer County jail Duffy says higher imprisonment rates are due to poverty, along with drug and alcohol addiction. In these cases, Duffy argues for treatment rather than jail.

"More Natives in jail is connected to  poverty."
