Niagra Falls, New York (NFIC) 10-07
Opening the show to a sold out crowd with Iroquois Dancers, a song by the drum group Young Gunz and a hand drum song by Livetime Achievement recipient Bill Miller, the show brought down the house. The hosts for the evening was a collaboration of different artist like Joanne Shenandoah; Keith Secola; Jim Boyd; Dale Oldhorn, the voice of NAMA; Moses Brings Plenty; and Dawn Karima Pettigrew.
The Ninth Annual Native American Music Awards, hosted by the Seneca Nation, was held on October 6, 2007, at the Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel in Niagra Falls, New York. From traditional, folk, country, rockin’ rythm and blues, this years Nammy’s stepped it up and took the show to the next level, with a larger stage, fancy lighting and killer sound.
This year’s NAMA awards program honored Native American artists in 30 different musical catagories with over 200 recordings submitted. The evenings live performances were like no other with over 12 jammn’ artist and bands, rockn’ between award presentations and some even belting out two songs back to back. Beginning with Nammy nominee Michael Bucher singing a song from his album Seven. Then came Nammy winner Tonemah who performs a mix of rock, country and folk, right away, he connected with the audience in an energenic way. Nammy nominee, DiggingRoots, what can a I say about them, they just plain rocked the venue from start to finish with a style all their own. Nammy nominee Jan Michael Looking Wolf performing on his flute was accompanied by guitarist Tim Yett and George Noriega. Nammy winner Susan Aglukark’s soothing voice finished out the first half of the show. Then came the spectacular, stage presentation of Jana opening the second half of the show with a full band behind her, Native American dancers, drums, hoop dancers, and even a hawk. Brulé & AIRO performed a steller set after the unpresented categories. As always they leave you wanting more. Brulé’s Drummer, Moses Brings Plenty, came to the stage soon after their performance adding more Native energy to the room as he introduced the performance of Nammy winner Nightshield. Then came the home boys, Nammy winners Pipestone belting out their version of NDN Lovn’ rez style all the way. They had the crowd rolling with laughter with lyrics that can only be created from the rez experience. Next up was Nammy Lifetime Achievement recipient, Joanne Shenandoah performing three songs with her daughter Leah and sister Dianne. With rockin’ rythm and blues, Nammy winners Corn-Bred took to the stage singing the Native blues.

This year’s show came to a close with none other then Derek Miller... one of the best guitarist in Indian Country.
