Muskegon, Michigan (AP) 1-08

The possibility of opening a casino in the city has drawn the interest of at least three groups.

The Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa is expected to present a casino proposal to the city that would involve an existing downtown building, The Muskegon Chronicle reported.

The tribe, which operates a casino in Watersmeet in the eastern Upper Peninsula, declined to comment on its plans.

Meanwhile, the leader of the Little River Band of Ottawa, which has a casino in the Manistee area, tells the newspaper that his tribe is interested in a Muskegon-area gambling operation.

“We look for other economic developments and work with local communities,” said Larry Romanelli, the tribe’s ogema. “We want to move Muskegon forward and be a part of what is happening.”

The tribes join the Archimedes Group LLC, which several years ago announced its interest in pursuing a casino through a development agreement with the Grand River Band of Ottawa Indians in Grand Rapids.

The group, however, has not secured federal tribal recognition.

“Our efforts will continue with the Grand River tribe and our development plans,” said Archimedes spokesman Dick Anderson.

Mayor Steve Warmington said Muskegon commissioners might give a go-ahead to the city administrative staff to continue discussions with the Lac Vieux Desert Band that could lead to an agreement with the city.
