Pierre, South Dakota (AP) 1-08

A man with 24 years of experience at the former State Training School is the new leader of state-run juvenile corrections programs.

Norbert Mohnen Jr. has been named superintendent of the State Treatment and Rehabilitation (STAR) Academy near Custer. He replaces Chuck Gilson, who retired last month.

Mohnen currently is superintendent at the Crow Creek Tribal School and residential dormitory. He’ll start his state government job on Jan. 22.

Mohnen was a supervisor, counselor, teacher and operations manager for the State Training School at Plankinton. The facility for juvenile offenders closed in 2001.
