An upstate New York woman has been charged with tax evasion for buying five cartons of untaxed cigarettes from an American Indian-owned store.
State police say Gay Breed, of Lysander, was stopped Oct. 17 after she was seen running a red light.
The trooper questioned Breed about the cigarettes and she produced a receipt for $196 from a Cayuga Indian Nation store. Officials say none of the cigarettes had stamps showing that state taxes had been paid.
Cayuga County District Attorney Jon Budelmann said failure to pay taxes on more than two cartons of cigarettes is a misdemeanor offense under state tax laws. He said Breed will be prosecuted.
Breed does not have a listed telephone number. She is scheduled to appear Oct. 21 in Aurelius Town Court.
