by Nick Vander Puy
Now, the tundra is melting and the Porcupine caribou herd in G'witchin territory is being devastated by global warming. More than thirty thousand caribou died a few years ago from unprecedented flooding during the caribou migration. When Peter was a young man G'witchin elders recognized his leadership and commissioned him to talk with the world about the melting of the big ice. Peter lives in Arizona now with his Navajo wife, travels, and talks with the world about the changing earth. He shared this information during early April at the Indigenous Earth Summit at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan. "Hunting for subsistence is a human right and it's being denied by global warming."

Evon Peter grew up in a G'witchin village a hundred miles north of the Arctic Circle. He lived in a one room cabin, carried water from the river with a yoke, and killed caribou to feed his family.
