peteseeger.jpgFolksinging lion Pete Seeger celebrated his 90th in grand style at Madison Square Garden during May with 20,000 of his closest friends, a group that included Joanne Shenandoah.

An elated Joane reported:

“It was a pleasure being on stage with my long-time friend Pete Seeger! Pete has been there for our Mother Earth and was kind enough to invite some of Indian Country’s top musicians and Native leaders to bless the beginning of the evening such as:

Vernon Masayesva, Oren Lyons, Eddie Benton, Tiokasin Ghosthorse, Carlos Nakai, Joseph Firecrow. Bill Miller, Margo Thunderbird, Casper Lomadawa, Victor Roland Mousaa and Native Advocate & Composer,  David Amram.

The crowd cheered loudly as we thanked Pete for his life’s work then followed the words of our spiritual leaders with an original song composed by Victor Roland and performed by the ensemble.

We set the tone for those who followed: John Mellancamp, Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews, Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, Bruce Cockburn, Ani Difranco, Kris Kristofferson, Emmy Lou Harris, Taj Mahal and so many others.

Similar events are being planned, but be certain this will be aired on PBS in the near future!”
