News From Indian Country

100_0840.jpg "That's a wrap, let's hear it for J.R. Redwater everybody!" says Steven Judd, writer and Director of the film, "In Search for the World's Best Indian Taco."

Redwater plays "Larry" a unrelenting Native man who seeks a relationship with "Rose" who runs an Indian taco stand.

JR Redwater, an enrolled member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe went to Hollywood with one dream in mind. That was to make it big. He moved there in 1999 after getting out of the U.S. Navy. Now, he has been a professional stand-up comedian for almost six years. "Larry" is the first movie part he ever auditioned for, and he was thrilled to get the call that they chose him.

Calls like this are coming more and more often for JR, and it seems that the dream is just starting. Most recently, JR has been named the official spokesmodel for Native Threads, a native owned clothing company based out of  Southern California. "I'm not even a model, but I'm gonna act like one the best I know how," said JR.

On November 27th, JR will be filming his first one hour stand-up comedy special for television, at the Dakota Magic Casino in Hankinson, North Dakota.  After living in Hollywood and performing stand-up along side the best talent in the business, JR knows that opportunities like this one only come once in a lifetime. "Especially, being and Indian, it's very humbling to know that I've been chosen to do this job," he said.

"It's not easy, nothing short of hard work. Nothing is handed to you. I remember what my dad told me, "JR, it's a dog eat dog world, if you don't take it, the next guy will." I'll never forget it."

You can also see JR featured with 6 other Indian comedians in an up and coming Showtime television special, "Goin' Native-The Indian Comedy Slam-No Reservations." This will air on December 31, so check your local listings for airtimes.

Finally, people need to know that it has been a long journey. God and sobriety is the reason why these dreams are coming true for JR. It has been over seven years since the last time he has used.

"I'm going to be a super star, I claimed it, God promised it."
