Indianapolis, Indiana (AP) March 2010
Indiana Health Commissioner Judy Monroe is taking a new job with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The governor’s office announced that Monroe will leave her state position week to become deputy director of the CDC and lead its new Office of State, Tribal, Local and Territorial Support.
Gov. Mitch Daniels appointed Monroe to head the state Health Department in 2005.
She led Indiana’s response to the swine flu pandemic and helped Indiana improve from 41st to 15th among states in fully immunizing children and trim its obesity rate from worst in the nation to 28th. She also led the creation of the state’s first medical errors reporting system.
Deputy Commissioner Loren Robertson will serve as the interim commissioner until Daniels names a replacement.
