Seattle, Washington (AP) March 2010
An $84 million Recovery Act grant will add 830 miles of fiber and eight new microwave sites to a high-speed network to help bring high-speed Internet access to some remote parts of Washington.
The expansion of the Northwest Open Access Network was announced recently in Seattle by Commerce Secretary Gary Locke.
The 1,800-mile network parallels the Bonneville Power Administration transmission system and currently serves 260,000 customers.
The expansion will add 57 libraries, 22 government facilities, 38 medical centers, two tribal service centers and four community colleges.
