Middlesboro, Kentucky (AP) July 2010 An eastern Kentucky man found a spearhead believed to be 8,000 to 10,000 years old while searching a cave for Native American artifacts. William Posey of Middlesboro told The Middlesboro Daily News that he was looking for signs of the Cherokee tribe in the caves near the Rocky Face cliffs in Bell County recently. Posey said he saw what looked like an arrowhead in the cave, and took it to Cumberland Gap National Historical Park for examination. Park historian Martha E. Wiley said the piece was an “exceptional specimen” of the Kirk Corner Notched type of point. Wiley said the piece appears large enough to have been on a spear and could fetch $100 per inch. Posey, who claims Cherokee heritage, plans to keep the piece.
