BIA officer pleads not guilty to stabbing wife

Grand Forks, North Dakota (AP) September 2010

A Bureau of Indian Affairs police officer for the Spirit Lake Nation in North Dakota has pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault.

Forty-one-year-old Duane Gunville is accused of stabbing his wife in the chest with a kitchen knife on Aug. 7 during an argument at their Devils Lake home. The Grand Forks Herald says Gunville’s wife needed several stitches.

Authorities say Gunville fled to the Belcourt area, where he was arrested after a standoff.

BIA Assistant Special Agent Mario Red Legs says Gunville is on unpaid administrative leave.

Gunville faces up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine if convicted.
