Navajo court reinstates disbarment for attorney

The Navajo Nation Supreme Court has reinstated the disbarment of a former attorney for the Tribal Council, saying he violated an order to stop issuing legal advice.

The high court first disbarred Frank Seanez in October for advising his clients to defy court orders. The court later reduced the sanction to a suspension.

The justices say they recently were provided documentation that indicated Seanez provided legal services to the council while suspended and was paid the salary of chief legislative counsel.

They reinstated the disbarment last week.

Seanez argued that only the council could remove him and that tribal law doesn’t require that the council’s top attorney have a Navajo bar license.

The court disagreed.
