Swastikas painted on church sign in Juneau County

Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin (AP) April 2011

The Juneau County sheriff’s office is investigating a hate crime against a Native American church.

Juneau County Sheriff Brent Oleson says members of the Native American Church in the Wisconsin Dells found a two swastikas spray-painted on their sign on April 13.

Church member Janice Cloud tells WISC-TV that while the swastika marks the first time the church has filed a police report, there have been prior, unreported acts of vandalism, theft and racial intimidation.

Oleson said that deputies found a liquor bottle at the scene but were unable to lift prints from it. He suspects two people were involved because a swastika was painted on each side of the sign in different colors.

Deputies have not made any arrests yet.
