A northern Arizona man has been sentenced to more than four years in prison for cutting the throat of his girlfriend last year.

Federal prosecutors said that 30-year-old Jeffrey Benner, of Cross Canyon, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Phoenix to a 51-month term followed by three years of supervised release.

Benner pleaded guilty Dec. 7 to assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

Tribal authorities say Benner assaulted his girlfriend July 26 on the Navajo reservation during an argument at the couple’s home.

Benner slammed a door and caused a picture frame to fall and shatter. He told the woman to pick up the broken glass. When she refused, authorities say Benner grabbed a piece of glass, pulled her head back by her hair and cut her throat.
