Kyle woman sentenced for bootlegging

Rapid City, South Dakota (AP) 9-07

A 42-year-old from Kyle has become the third woman prosecuted in federal court this year for bootlegging on the dry Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Judy Lays Hard has been sentenced to eight months in prison. She pleaded guilty to two counts of illegally dispensing intoxicants in Indian Country.

U.S. Attorney Marty Jackley said federal authorities increased enforcement after requests from elders and tribal leaders at Pine Ridge, the only South Dakota reservation where alcohol is banned. That means itÂ’s the only reservation where the federal law is enforced.
