Meskwaki police investigate discovery of body 5-28-07

TAMA, Iowa (AP) - A body was found over the weekend on the Meskwaki settlement, authorities said.

Sam Lincoln, who lived at the settlement, was found lying in the train tracks just before 2 p.m. on Sunday. The 35-year-old had suffered massive head trauma, according to officials from the Meskwaki Nation police department.

The cause of death was pending, but tribal police said they believe it was accidental.

Crew members with Union Pacific told authorities they had run over Lincoln, who was already lying in the middle of the tracks. Police said a different crew reported seeing someone walking along the tracks, and that they believed it was Lincoln.

The tribe's new, six-member police force became operational last Sept. 30.

The settlement, west of Tama, has about 1,400 tribal members.
