Gipp applauds decision to retire nickname

Bismarck, N.D. April 2010

The president of United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck says he applauds the retiring of the University of North Dakota’s Fighting Sioux nickname and logo.

David Gipp – a UND alumnus – calls the moniker an “ethnic stereotype.” He says retiring it is a demonstration of respect for the state’s largest minority population.

A state Supreme Court ruling and a Board of Higher Education decision have retired for good the Fighting Sioux nickname after a four-year legal battle.

Gipp says eliminating American Indian imagery in college sports will improve the learning environment for Indian students.

United Tribes Technical College is run by North Dakota tribes.
