UND students sad but not surprised

Grand Forks, N.D. April 2010

Some University of North Dakota students say they were resigned to the retirement of the school’s Fighting Sioux nickname but are still sad to see it go.

Sophomore Anthony Johnson of Fargo says students haven’t shown much emotion about the decision because most of them expected the logo to be dropped eventually.

Johnson says he can understand arguments on both sides of the issue, but he believes students tried to use the nickname and logo with respect.

Junior Cullen Donohue of Minneapolis says he’s disappointed because he enjoyed the nickname and doesn’t believe students will give it up easily.

Donohue says he doesn’t expect a backlash against UND American Indian students. He says that would be “very radical.”
