UND Indian students fear backlash

Grand Forks, N.D. April 2010

Some American Indian students at the University of North Dakota say they are happy about the retirement of the school’s Fighting Sioux nickname but are worried about retaliation.

BJ Rainbow, a UND senior who has ties to the Spirit Lake and Standing Rock tribes, says it’s the start of a new era. He is hoping for a peaceful transition but says that might not be realistic.

Rainbow says school officials have promised increased security around the office of American Indian Student Services. He says it was a “normal Friday” around the center, except for an appearance by UND President Robert Kelley.
