Wisconsin Senate to consider Indian mascots bill

Madison, Wisconsin April 2010

The state Senate is poised to take up a bill that would allow the state schools superintendent to order schools to drop American Indian logos and mascots.

The measure would allow any school district resident to file a complaint about a race-based school nickname, logo or mascot. The superintendent would have to hold a hearing on the complaint. The school board would have to prove the use doesn’t promote discrimination.

If the superintendent finds the use is derogatory, he or she would have to order the board to drop it.

The state Assembly passed a similar measure in February. Both chambers must pass an identical version before it can go to Gov. Jim Doyle’s desk.
