Hoeven: Consider vote on Fighting Sioux nickname

North Dakota Gov. John Hoeven wants the state Board of Higher Education to consider any vote on the Standing Rock Sioux reservation in its deliberations about the University of North Dakota’s Fighting Sioux nickname.

Hoeven responded last week to an appeal by members of the Spirit Lake Sioux tribe in favor of the nickname.

The board voted earlier to retire the nickname unless the Spirit Lake and Standing Rock tribes provided a 30-year agreement for its continued use.

Hoeven says in a letter to university system chancellor William Goetz  that if Standing Rock tribal members vote in favor of the nickname before Nov. 30, the Board of Higher Education should consider that.

Spirit Lake tribal members have voted to support the nickname, but there’s been no vote scheduled on Standing Rock.
