Tonalea, Arizona man sentenced for killing his cousin

Phoenix, Arizona (AP) August 2010

A Navajo Nation tribal member has been sentenced to nearly 16 years in federal prison for the slaying of his cousin last August.

Federal prosecutors said Aug. 4 that 24-year-old Marcus Luther was given a 189-month term followed by three years of closely supervised release. Luther, of Tonalea, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Phoenix after he pleaded guilty in April to second-degree murder.

Luther was arrested after multiple witnesses saw him hitting 24-year-old Dexter Yazzie repeatedly with a fiberglass ax handle outside a Cow Springs home on Aug. 15, 2009. Authorities say Yazzie died while en route to a hospital.

Luther told Kayenta police that he and his cousin didn’t like each other and a fight ensued after he asked Yazzie to leave his home.
