Flooding causes evacuations in Wakpala

Rising water in Oak Creek has forced some residents from their homes on the east side of Wakpala, which is on the Standing Rock Reservation in northern South Dakota.

Resident Christopher Plenty Chief had to ride in a pay loader to get into one of the homes to retrieve some medications.

Water also surrounded his mother’s home. Maurena Plenty Chief said she didn’t want to leave her home but that she fought the same battle in the flood of 1997.

She said if the floor in her house gets wet again, it’s going to fall through.

Resident Eugene Lafranboise expects “extensive damage” to homes and the land before all is said and done. His home is surrounded by water.
