Chicago Sun-Times dismisses smallpox-laced blankets

Dear Editor,

I am contacting many in the Native American community to inform them of an editorial that appeared in the Sunday, April 12, 2009 edition of the Chicago Sun-Times entitled “How did a fraud like Churchill get so far?”  The piece blasts Churchill for fraudulently claiming to be “3/16” Native American (rightly so.)

However, it goes on to call the giving of smallpox-laced blankets by the U.S. a “bogus story.”  I have written a letter to the editor criticizing the paper’s dismissal of an actual historical event.  I am urging others to make their voices heard by also contacting the Sun-Times in an effort to educate its readers about this.  The editorial can be read at suntimes.com.  The paper can also be contacted via email at the same site.  Thank you for any support you can give.

Doug Boodt
