Deciding she wanted a change, Elizabeth Henhawk (Onondaga/Iroquois) moved to Indianapolis a few years ago from the Six Nations Reservation in Ontario, Canada.

“Because I had worked at the Indian Center there, I looked for one here after I moved,” Henhawk said, which began her involvement with the American Indian Center of Indiana, Inc.

“I was enrolled in the Medical Billing Code program at the Indiana Business College in Columbus, and the AICI helped me with the cost of my books,” she said, adding, “They also helped me build my resumé and assisted me with placement in my job at Central Indiana Billing (Bargersville).”

Henhawk’s interest in medical billing began in Canada when she volunteered at the Indian Center’s home health care program by transporting people who lived off the reservation to their medical appointments, the grocery store, and with anything else they needed such as help with their status cards. She later took a paid position in the office and discovered she enjoyed bill coding.

As for future goals, Henhawk said, “I’d like to gain more experience on the insurance side of billing, and possibly work in a doctor’s office.”
Henhawk’s son, Quarry, and his family reside in Canada; her daughter, Misty, and her family live here in Indiana. Henhawk has five grandchildren whom she describes as, “a real joy in my life.”

In her free time, she enjoys quilting, reading novels and helping her daughter make dreamcatchers, which they sell On The Net at:
