Bismarck, North Dakota (AP) January 2011
The retirement of the University of North Dakotas Fighting Sioux nickname has been voted the states top sports story for 2010.
The survey of the broadcast and print members of The Associated Press picked the nickname issue over North Dakota States run through the Division I FCS football playoffs.
The long-standing issue of the UND nickname came to a head when a court ruling upheld the Board of Higher Educations authority to retire the logo at any time.
NDSUs unlikely finish included its first-ever playoff game in the Fargodome.
The Olympic silver-medal run by Grand Forks sisters Jocelyne and Monique Lamoureux was voted third, followed by Fargo South High School track star Laura Roeslers route to a state-record 20 individual championships, and UNDs foray into the Big Sky Conference.
