Mohegan detail proposal for Massachusetts casino

The Mohegan tribe has unveiled a plan for a $1 billion casino in Massachusetts.

The proposed casino would include up to 4,000 slot machines, a 600 room hotel and a giant retail center in the western Massachusetts town of Palmer.

The plan is the Mohegan tribe’s answer to a billion dollar casino proposed by the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe in Middleborough. Both plans are contingent on whether lawmakers approve casino gambling in the state.

The Mohegans already run the Mohegan Sun casino in southeastern Connecticut.

The town of Palmer has considered the casino idea before. Voters approved a nonbinding referendum in the 1990s that called for a casino there.

The issue will be discussed at a town council meeting during September 2007.
