Indian casinos in Arizona bring in $2 billion

Tribal casinos in Arizona pulled in nearly $2 billion in gross gaming revenue during fiscal 2007. That’s an increase of 8.6 percent from the prior year, the Arizona Department of Gaming said.

The 15 tribes and the 22 Indian-owned casinos reported combined gross gaming revenue of $1.94 billion for the fiscal year ending June 30, up from $1.79 billion in 2006.

Under the state’s gaming compact, the tribes are required to share between 1 percent and 8 percent of their revenue with the state, generating $92.2 million for the Arizona Benefits Fund.

The fund distributes money to schools, hospitals, tourism, conservation and problem gambling funds.

Some Arizona cities, towns and counties were the beneficiary of $11.3 million of gaming revenue donated by the tribes.

Since 2003, gaming tribes have shared $336 million of their revenue.
