Probe launched after human skulls received at BYU

Provo, Utah (AP) November 2010

Police and state officials are trying to trace the source of two human skulls received by the history department at Brigham Young University in Utah.

Campus police Lt. Arnold Lemmon said recently that the skulls were found last week in a box delivered by the U.S. Postal Service.

Investigators say they appear to be ancient artifacts – possibly a Native American adult and child. State archaeological society officials are working to determine the ethnicity and era of the bones.

BYU Police Sgt. Mike Mock told the Deseret News that investigators don’t know why the skulls were sent to BYU.

The box had a return address in Montana that officials weren’t immediately able to confirm exists.

Mock says police think the sender might know about recent artifact possession indictments in Utah.
