CMU returns Indian remains to Saginaw Chippewas

Mount Pleasant, Michigan (AP) November 2010

Central Michigan University has given the remains of 144 Indians to the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe for burial.

American Indian Movement co-founder Dennis Banks was among hundreds of people who took part in a 5-mile walk last week to accompany the remains from campus to the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe’s Nibokaan Ancestral Cemetery. A burial is planned November 12th.

The university says it started talks on repatriating the remains in 2008. It says the remains were being held by its Museum of Cultural and Natural History.

The repatriation events started last week with a round-table discussion that included Banks and others about the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.
