Idaho tribe gets $500K for police gear

Plummer, Idaho (AP) September 2010

Northern Idaho’s Coeur d’Alene Tribe has received $500,000 in federal funding to upgrade its police equipment and vehicles.

With the U.S. Department of Justice grant, it’s buying a new boat to assist enforcement work on Lake Coeur d’Alene, as well as five new patrol cars, computers and other equipment.

Coeur d’Alene Tribal Police Chief Keith Hutcheson says the cash means his agency will have the latest tools and technology to protect the reservation community, as well as people recreating or just driving through the tribe’s territory.

The tribe has jurisdiction over the southern third of Lake Coeur d’Alene.

It already has two boats, but the new one will be faster and have more maneuverability.

Hutcheson says he hopes the new boat’s capabilities will his 14-person police department save lives.
