Warm Springs tribal agency must prove it has safe housing

Bend, Oregon (AP) September 2010

Federal regulators have warned the Warm Springs Housing Authority the tribal agency must prove it can provide safe housing for reservation residents in central Oregon or face a range of federal penalties.

The Bulletin newspaper in Bend reported the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department sent a letter to the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs during September questioning whether it can manage federal housing grants.

Since 2003, federal audits have found the tribal housing authority mismanaged federal Indian Housing Block Grant funds and failed to fix a wide array of health and safety problems ranging from a lack of smoke detectors to crumbling sidewalks and crime.

As of the end of August, the tribes had addressed eight of 10 violations identified by federal investigators in 2009.
