South Dakota tribe wants to develop national cemetery

Rapid City, South Dakota (AP) February 2011

The Rosebud Sioux Tribe is reviewing bids for architecture and engineering design for a national cemetery that would be located on reservation land near Mission.

The tribe is proceeding based on a grant opportunity letter from the Veterans Affairs.

Frank Salvas is director of the VA’s State Cemetery Grants Service. He told the Rapid City Journal that cemetery construction depends on the tribe’s ability to meet stringent deadlines for a $5.3 million grant.

The Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis is the only national cemetery in the state that is open for burials. Its cemetery director, Sara Elton, told the Journal that national cemeteries in Hot Springs and Fort Meade are closed to burials.
