Navajo lawmakers OK lease extension for NM plant

Navajo lawmakers have approved a lease extension for a northwestern New Mexico power plant that increases the amount of money the tribe receives.

Lawmakers voted 18-2 last week to extend the lease for the Four Corners Power Plant until 2041.

The tribe will receive $7 million a year over the life of the lease, up from an average of $1.5 million the tribe had been receiving annually under the previous lease.

The plant’s operator had said it likely would close the coal-fired plant if the lease that was set to expire in 2016 wasn’t extended.

Navajo lawmakers amended the legislation to require that the plant have the best available technology to reduce emissions.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has proposed cutting nitrogen oxides at the plant by 87 percent.
