South Dakota tribe dealing with creek flooding

Pine Ridge, South Dakota (AP) February 2011

The Oglala Sioux Tribe in South Dakota is dealing with flooding along Calico Creek near Pine Ridge.

The Rapid City Journal reports that the tribe’s emergency management team is seeking more sandbags and volunteers to fill and place them.

Snowmelt runoff, ice jams, and clogged culverts and bridges are causing the creek to overflow its banks in low-lying areas north of Pine Ridge. People in the area who have special medical needs have been asked to move to higher ground, though a temporary shelter the Red Cross opened on February 14 and was closed February 15 because it wasn’t being used.
