Cherokee Nation Inauguration Ceremony Scheduled 8-07

TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Cherokee Nation’s elected leaders for the upcoming term will be sworn into office in an inauguration ceremony on Cherokee Nation Courthouse Square, 101 S. Muskogee Ave. in Tahlequah, beginning at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, August 14, 2007.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony, which is scheduled to run until approximately noon. Principal Chief Chad Smith and Deputy Principal Chief Joe Grayson, Jr. will each deliver a commitment address, focusing on “Moving in the Right Direction” for the Cherokee Nation.

The justices of the Cherokee Nation Supreme Court will administer the oaths of office. Justice James G. Wilcoxen will swear in the Tribal Council members serving six-year terms of office, Justice Kyle B. Haskins will swear in those serving four-year terms, Justice Darrell Dowty will swear Grayson into office and Chief Justice Darell R. Matlock, Jr., will swear Smith into office.

Cherokee Nation Tribal Council members who will be sworn in are: Bill John Baker, Tina Glory-Jordon, S. Joe Crittenden, Jodie Fishinghawk, David Thornton, Janelle Lattimore Fullbright, Don Garvin, Harley L. Buzzard, Curtis G. Snell, Meredith Frailey, Chris Soap, Cara Cowan Watts, Buel Anglen, Bradley Cobb, and Charles “Chuck” Hoskin, Jr. At Large members are Jack D. Baker and Julia Coates.

The official ceremony will include performances by the Cherokee National Youth Choir, an Eagle Tail Fan ceremony and a tree planting ceremony. A reception will follow the ceremonies on the Cherokee Nation Courthouse lawn.
