Wisconsin Chippewa band to get land back from gov’t

Superior, Wisconsin (AP) April 2011

Nearly a century ago a Lake Superior band of Chippewa was evicted from its village. Now the Fond du Lac Band is on the verge of getting its tribal home back.

The U.S. Department of Interior has agreed to return 15 acres of land on Wisconsin Point in Superior. The decision resolves a decade of bureaucratic snarl.

Wisconsin Public Radio says the tribe’s land was taken away in 1918 when a steel company wanted to build ore docks there.

A number of graves at the site were moved. Fond du Lac Tribal chairwoman Karen Diver says the tribe wants to use the land to care for the remaining gravesites.

Diver says the last step before the deal is finalized is resolving federal paperwork. She says she hopes the land transfer will happen by the summer.
